Houston is the largest city in the state of Texas! Of course, you know that if you have lived here a while. History is important, and it is easy to lose sight of how we came to be. Here is a brief rundown of some things you may not be aware of about your hometown. If you are new to Houston this can serve as a quick history lesson to get you up to speed:

  • The city was named after Sam Houston, the popular general at the Battle of San Jacinto, who was elected President of Texas in September 1836.
  • The city contains a culturally diverse population brought here by our previous success in the port and railroad industry, and a big oil discovery in 1901.
  • The population has grown in surges as these industries have adapted and changed over the years. We are also leading in health care sectors and building oilfield equipment.
  • Otherwise, you already know, or will shortly discover that Houston is a beautiful place to live that is full of stability, comfort, and historic charm. If you ever feel like you are lonely in Houston, know that you are surrounded by 2.1 million residents!
