Registration for running is closed but you can still enjoy the event as spectator, volunteer, or fundraiser.
The runners have their choice of running the whole marathon, which is a 6 hours, a half marathon, the 5K or the Kids Fun Run.
Spectators don’t just have to watch the marathon they can also enjoy an Elvis impersonator and a whole host of marathon activities.
My favorite part of the event is the fact that armed service members in Afganistan will be running the race from there as well. Marathon officials are coordinating races here and in a spot where an armed service member is serving.
Soldiers and civilian workers will run on a two-mile loop course on FOB Ghazni about 7,000 feet above sea level in eastern Afghanistan, running just over six laps to complete the 13.1-mile race. Because the base consists of large chunks of gravel, the course will take place on a small airfield with packed sand. About 150 runners are registered for the Afghanistan race, including 34 from Texas.
